Contreras Ejected Again as Cavalli’s Brilliance is Overshadowed

Willson Contreras was ejected for the second consecutive game on Tuesday night, but the real story from Fenway wasn’t about what happened in the batter’s box—it was what came out of Cade Cavalli’s mouth from the mound. The Washington Nationals right-hander delivered a pitching line that would normally dominate the conversation: 13 strikeouts, one hit, no walks over seven innings. Instead, a racist comment hurled at Contreras during the fourth inning sparked a benches-clearing altercation that defined the evening and raised serious questions about league discipline and player safety.

This is Contreras’s second ejection in as many games, which tells you something about the escalating tension. Whether he was the instigator or responding to provocation, the pattern matters. The Red Sox brought Contreras to Boston to be a leader behind the plate and a stabilizing presence in the lineup. Getting tossed twice in back-to-back contests undermines that role, even if—especially if—he had legitimate cause to react. Manager Alex Cora will need to manage this carefully. Contreras is valuable, but repeated ejections create a narrative that works against the team’s chemistry.

But let’s not lose sight of the larger issue: what Cavalli said. Individual performances on the mound don’t excuse behavior that crosses a line off it. MLB needs to respond with meaningful consequences, not token fines. The league has made noise about protecting players and creating an inclusive environment. This is the moment to back that up with action. A 13-strikeout performance doesn’t earn you the right to use slurs or demean opponents.

The Red Sox front office, under Craig Breslow’s oversight, should demand accountability through proper channels. This isn’t about winning a game—it’s about setting a standard for how players represent the sport. The pitching brilliance will be forgotten quickly. The racist comment won’t be.
