Contreras Gets All-Star Nod Despite Suspension Drama

Willson Contreras is heading to the All-Star Game as an injury replacement. Yes, the same Willson Contreras who’s currently suspended pending appeal. Yes, baseball’s logic is occasionally befuddling.
Here’s what matters though: the Red Sox aren’t using this as an excuse to panic or punt. Craig Breslow and Alex Cora have made it clear — we’re going to battle to win this division. That’s the mentality you want in July, especially when your best hitter is in limbo. The front office could’ve packed it in. Instead, they’re doubling down on the current roster’s ability to compete.
Ceddanne Rafaela’s emergence as a legitimate contributor gives them real lineup flexibility while Contreras sorts out his appeal. Rafaela’s power stroke — evident in that two-run shot against Chicago — provides the kind of upside you need to weather adversity. Pair that with Masataka Yoshida’s presence in the DH spot and you’ve got a lineup that can still score runs even if things get uncomfortable in the first base picture.
The pitching staff, anchored by Ranger Suarez and Sonny Gray, has enough depth to compete for division games. This isn’t a team built to absorb extended absences gracefully, but they’re built well enough to not implode if forced to. That’s the difference between a contender and a pretender in a tight AL East race.
The All-Star selection is almost beside the point. It’s the message underneath it that matters: the Red Sox believe this roster, as currently constructed and however it’s forced to operate under suspension rules, can still fight for October baseball. That’s not bravado. It’s a reasonable assessment.
