Buffy Sainte-Marie Loses Honorary Degree Over Indigenous Claims

The University of Toronto just dropped a bombshell: they’re revoking Oscar-winning folk legend Buffy Sainte-Marie’s honorary Doctor of Laws degree over questions about her Indigenous ancestry claims. Yeah, you read that right.
The university announced the rescission without a ton of fanfare, but the implications are huge. Sainte-Marie has long identified as Cree and has been a prominent voice in Indigenous activism for decades. Her honorary degree was supposed to celebrate that legacy. Instead, the university essentially called BS on her heritage credentials.
This is the kind of scandal that can absolutely tank a legacy. We’re talking about a woman with a Grammy, an Oscar, and decades of cultural influence. But apparently, the university did their digging and decided something didn’t add up with her ancestry story.
The folk icon hasn’t publicly responded yet, but you know this is going to get messy. Supporters are likely to rally around her, critics will say the university did the right thing, and the whole thing is about to become a massive culture war talking point.
For now, Sainte-Marie’s honorary degree is officially gone. That’s the tea.
