JonDarius Morgan’s Path Forward With Patriots OL Overhaul

The Patriots offensive line is in flux, and JonDarius Morgan is competing for meaningful snaps in what’s shaping up to be a wide-open depth chart at tackle. With Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf retooling the roster, the team brought in Alijah Vera-Tucker to bolster the guard rotation, but that move actually opens the door for Morgan to prove he belongs in the tackle rotation alongside veterans like Morgan Moses, Will Campbell, and Vederian Lowe.

What we saw at rookie camp tells us the Patriots are serious about evaluating their young offensive linemen. Jonathan Decoster monitoring Morgan alongside Elijah Simonson and Mehki Butler suggests the coaching staff is testing combinations and assessing which of these young guys can hold up in training camp. Morgan has the frame and athleticism scouts covet in a tackle prospect, but execution matters more than potential when the regular season arrives. He’s going to need to prove he can sustain blocks in space and handle edge defenders consistently.

The tackle room is genuinely deep. Adding Vera-Tucker to the guard mix while already having James Hudson III, Thayer Munford Jr., and others available suggests Vrabel and Wolf are prioritizing offensive line stability—a smart call given how injury-prone that unit tends to be. Morgan’s role probably isn’t as a Day One starter, but as a swing tackle with upside, he slots in exactly where you want young depth pieces. The question is whether he can translate what he showed at camp into actual snaps.

Morgan’s window is closing on being a “project” with potential. Year two in the system with real competition bearing down—Dametrious Crownover, Caleb Lomu, and others are all fighting for reps. He needs to establish himself now. The Patriots are building something under new leadership, and there’s opportunity there. But opportunity only matters if you grab it.
