Connecting Canva with Hootsuite
Hootsuite has a native Canva integration built directly into its post composer. This means you can design social media graphics with Canva's full editor without ever leaving the Hootsuite dashboard. It is one of the more polished design integrations among social media management tools, and it significantly reduces the friction of creating visual content.
How the Native Integration Works
The integration embeds Canva's design editor inside Hootsuite's post creation workflow. When you create a new post in Hootsuite, you can open Canva to design a graphic, then attach it to your post and schedule it, all within the same interface.
Accessing Canva in Hootsuite
- Log into your Hootsuite dashboard.
- Click Create or New Post to open the post composer.
- In the media section of the composer, look for the Canva button or icon. It appears alongside options for uploading images, using stock photos, or browsing your media library.
- Click the Canva button. This opens the Canva editor in an overlay window within Hootsuite.
- If this is your first time, you will be asked to connect your Canva account. Log in with your Canva credentials and authorize the connection.
- The Canva editor opens with dimensions pre-set for the social network you are posting to. If you selected multiple networks (e.g., Instagram and Twitter), Canva typically defaults to a size that works well across platforms.
Designing Within Hootsuite
Once the Canva editor is open inside Hootsuite, you have access to most of Canva's design features:
- Templates: Browse and search Canva's template library. Templates are filtered to match the dimensions of your selected social platform.
- Elements: Add shapes, icons, illustrations, photos, and graphics from Canva's library.
- Text: Add and format text with Canva's font library. If you have Canva Pro with a Brand Kit, your brand fonts are available.
- Uploads: Access your previously uploaded images and assets from your Canva account.
- Brand Kit: If you are on Canva Pro or Canva Teams, your brand colors, fonts, and logos are accessible within the embedded editor.
- Photos: Search and use stock photos from Canva's built-in library (some are free, others require Canva Pro).
Publishing the Design
- When your design is complete, click Save or Publish within the Canva editor panel.
- The design is automatically attached to your Hootsuite post as an image.
- Write your post caption, select hashtags, and choose your posting schedule.
- Click Schedule, Post Now, or Save as Draft in Hootsuite.
The entire flow, from opening Canva to scheduling the post, takes place within Hootsuite. You do not need to download the image, switch tabs, or upload files.
Setting Up the Integration
Requirements
- Hootsuite account: The Canva integration is available on Hootsuite Professional, Team, and Enterprise plans. Check your plan's feature list, as the integration may not be available on the free or lower-tier plans.
- Canva account: Works with Canva Free, Canva Pro, and Canva Teams. The Canva plan you use determines which templates, elements, and features are available in the embedded editor.
- Connected social profiles: You need at least one social media profile connected in Hootsuite to create and schedule posts.
Connecting Canva to Hootsuite
The connection is established the first time you use the integration:
- Open the Hootsuite post composer and click the Canva button.
- A login prompt appears. Sign in to your Canva account (or create one if needed).
- Authorize Hootsuite to access your Canva designs and assets.
- The Canva editor opens and is ready to use.
The authorization is stored, so you will not need to log in again unless you disconnect the accounts. To manage the connection, check My Profile > Apps & Integrations in Hootsuite or Account Settings > Connected Apps in Canva.
Tips for Effective Use
Start with Templates
Canva's template library is the fastest way to create professional social media graphics. When the editor opens inside Hootsuite:
- Browse the template suggestions or use the search bar to find templates by topic (e.g., "sale announcement," "product launch," "motivational quote").
- Select a template and customize it with your brand colors, fonts, text, and images.
- Save the design and it is ready to attach to your Hootsuite post.
Create Brand Templates in Canva
For teams that post frequently, create a set of reusable templates in Canva that match your brand guidelines:
- In Canva (outside of Hootsuite), design a set of templates for common post types: announcements, quotes, product features, team highlights, event promotions.
- Save these as templates in your Canva account. On Canva Pro or Teams, you can save them to your Brand Templates folder.
- When designing in Hootsuite, access these templates from the "Your templates" or "Brand templates" section of the Canva editor.
- Team members can use the same templates, ensuring visual consistency across all social posts.
Platform-Specific Designs
Different social platforms have different optimal image sizes. When you create a post for multiple platforms in Hootsuite, consider whether a single image works for all of them:
- Square (1080x1080): Works well on Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
- Landscape (1200x628): Preferred for Twitter/X and Facebook link previews.
- Portrait (1080x1350): Performs well on Instagram feed and Facebook.
If you are posting to platforms with different preferred dimensions, consider creating platform-specific versions of your graphic. In Hootsuite, you can customize the media for each platform within the composer by selecting individual networks and attaching different images.
Use Canva's Resize Feature
Canva Pro includes a Magic Resize feature that automatically adapts your design to different dimensions. While this feature may have limited functionality within the embedded Hootsuite editor, you can:
- Design your graphic in the embedded Canva editor for one platform.
- Open Canva separately (in a new tab) and use Magic Resize to create versions for other platforms.
- Download the resized versions and upload them to Hootsuite for the corresponding social channels.
Using Hootsuite's Media Library with Canva
Hootsuite has its own media library where you can store frequently used images, videos, and graphics. Designs created with Canva inside Hootsuite can be saved to this library for reuse:
- After creating a Canva design, the image is available in your Hootsuite media library for future posts.
- This is useful for recurring content themes where you need to reuse or slightly modify existing graphics.
- Access the media library from the Hootsuite composer by clicking the image/media icon and selecting Media Library.
Team Collaboration
For teams using Hootsuite Team or Enterprise plans alongside Canva Teams:
- Shared templates: Brand templates created in Canva Teams are accessible to all team members when they use the Canva editor in Hootsuite.
- Approval workflows: Hootsuite's approval workflow features let team members create posts with Canva designs and submit them for review before publishing.
- Asset management: Canva's shared folders and Hootsuite's media library provide two layers of asset management. Establish a team convention for where assets are stored to avoid duplication.
Limitations
- Embedded editor limitations: The Canva editor embedded in Hootsuite may not support every Canva feature. Advanced features like Canva's video editor, animation tools, or certain premium elements may only be available in the full Canva application.
- Image format only: The integration primarily supports static images. Video content created in Canva typically needs to be downloaded and uploaded separately to Hootsuite.
- Hootsuite plan restrictions: Verify that your Hootsuite plan includes the Canva integration. Lower-tier plans may not offer this feature.
- Canva Pro features require Canva Pro: Premium templates, stock photos, Brand Kit, Magic Resize, and background remover are only available if your Canva account is on a paid plan. The integration itself is free, but Canva's premium features are not.
- Design editing after creation: Once a Canva design is attached to a Hootsuite post, editing the design may require opening Canva again. Changes to the design in Canva do not automatically update already-scheduled Hootsuite posts.
- Multi-page designs: Similar to other integrations, multi-page Canva designs (like carousel posts) may not transfer as a carousel through the embedded editor. You may need to handle these manually.
Alternative: Hootsuite's Built-In Editor
Hootsuite also includes its own basic image editor for simple modifications like cropping, adding text overlays, and applying filters. For quick edits, this built-in editor may be sufficient. However, for branded graphics, template-based designs, or anything beyond basic photo editing, the Canva integration is significantly more capable.
Summary
The Canva integration in Hootsuite removes the biggest bottleneck in social media management: creating visual content. By embedding Canva's design tools directly in the post composer, Hootsuite lets you go from idea to scheduled post without context-switching between applications. For teams that manage social media at scale, this integration turns Hootsuite into both a publishing platform and a design studio.
