How to Connect Instagram to Buffer

Buffer supports Instagram scheduling, but there are specific requirements you need to meet before you can connect your account. Unlike Twitter/X, Instagram's API requires a Business or Creator account and a linked Facebook Page. This guide covers everything you need to know about setting up and using Buffer with Instagram.

Account Requirements

Before you can connect Instagram to Buffer, make sure the following are in place:

  • Instagram Business or Creator account: Personal Instagram accounts cannot be connected to Buffer. You must convert your account to a Business or Creator account in the Instagram app under Settings, then Account, then Switch to Professional Account.
  • Linked Facebook Page: Your Instagram Business or Creator account must be connected to a Facebook Page. This is a requirement imposed by Meta's API, not by Buffer. You can link them in the Instagram app under Settings, then Account, then Linked Accounts, then Facebook.
  • Facebook Page admin access: You must be an admin of the Facebook Page linked to your Instagram account.

If you skip any of these steps, you will encounter errors when trying to connect Instagram to Buffer.

Connecting Instagram to Buffer

  1. Log in to Buffer at buffer.com.
  2. Go to Settings (gear icon in the left sidebar).
  3. Click Channels.
  4. Click Connect Channel and select Instagram.
  5. Buffer will ask you to log in to Facebook. Use the Facebook account that has admin access to the Page linked to your Instagram account.
  6. Select the Facebook Page associated with your Instagram account.
  7. Select the Instagram Business or Creator account you want to connect.
  8. Grant the requested permissions and complete the connection.

Once connected, your Instagram account will appear in your channel list and you can start creating and scheduling content.

Types of Content You Can Schedule

Buffer supports several types of Instagram content, each with its own capabilities and limitations:

Feed Posts

Standard Instagram feed posts are fully supported. You can schedule single-image posts, multi-image carousel posts (up to 10 images), and video posts. Feed posts support auto-publishing, meaning Buffer will publish them automatically at your scheduled time without any manual intervention.

  • Supported image formats: JPG, PNG
  • Recommended image size: 1080 x 1080 pixels (square), 1080 x 1350 pixels (portrait), or 1080 x 566 pixels (landscape)
  • Video length: Up to 60 seconds for feed videos

Instagram Stories

Buffer supports scheduling Instagram Stories with some limitations. Stories can be scheduled with images or short video clips. However, interactive Story elements like polls, quizzes, question stickers, and countdown timers cannot be added through Buffer. You would need to add those natively in the Instagram app. Story scheduling requires auto-publish to be enabled.

Reels

Buffer supports scheduling Instagram Reels. You can upload a video, add a caption, and schedule it for a specific time. However, you cannot add Instagram's native music, effects, or advanced editing features through Buffer. If you need those, create your Reel in the Instagram app and use Buffer only for scheduling the upload. Reels support auto-publishing.

Auto-Publish vs. Push Notification Publishing

Buffer offers two publishing modes for Instagram:

  • Auto-publish (direct scheduling): Buffer publishes your post automatically at the scheduled time. This works for feed posts (single image, carousels, and video), Stories, and Reels. Auto-publish requires an Instagram Business or Creator account connected via a Facebook Page, which is the setup described in this guide.
  • Reminders (push notification publishing): For content types that cannot be auto-published, or if you prefer to review posts before they go live, Buffer sends a push notification to your phone at the scheduled time. You then open the Instagram app and publish manually. Buffer copies the caption to your clipboard and loads the media to make this process easier.

Auto-publish is the recommended approach for most users, as it eliminates the need for manual intervention. Reminders are useful if you want to add finishing touches (like location tags or interactive stickers) before posting.

First Comment Scheduling

Buffer allows you to schedule a first comment alongside your Instagram post. This is a popular strategy for keeping captions clean while still using hashtags for discoverability. To use this feature:

  1. Create your post in the Buffer composer.
  2. Look for the First Comment option below the caption field.
  3. Type your first comment (commonly a set of hashtags).
  4. Schedule your post as usual. When Buffer auto-publishes the post, it will also publish the first comment immediately after.

This feature is available on Buffer's paid plans.

Hashtag Management

Buffer includes a hashtag manager to help you organize and reuse hashtag groups. To set up hashtag groups:

  1. Open the post composer and select your Instagram account.
  2. Click the # (hashtag) icon in the composer toolbar.
  3. Create a new hashtag group by giving it a name and entering your hashtags.
  4. Save the group. You can then insert the entire group into a caption or first comment with a single click.

Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post. Using more than 30 will cause the post to fail. Many social media experts recommend using between 5 and 15 relevant hashtags for optimal reach.

Instagram Shopping Tags

As of the current integration, Buffer does not support adding Instagram Shopping product tags to posts. If you use Instagram Shopping, you will need to add product tags manually in the Instagram app after the post is published, or use Instagram's native tools for shoppable posts. This is a limitation of Instagram's API for third-party tools.

Best Time to Post

Buffer's paid plans include a best time to post feature for Instagram. This analyzes your historical engagement data and suggests optimal posting times for your specific audience. To access this:

  • Go to Analytics in the left sidebar.
  • Select your Instagram account.
  • Look for the posting time recommendations under the Answers section.

These suggestions become more accurate as Buffer collects more data from your posts over time.

Analytics

Buffer provides Instagram analytics on paid plans, including:

  • Post performance: Likes, comments, saves, and reach for each post.
  • Audience growth: Follower count trends over time.
  • Engagement rate: The percentage of your audience that interacts with your posts.
  • Top posts: Your best-performing content over a selected time period.
  • Stories analytics: Views and engagement for scheduled Stories.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Connection fails: Double-check that your Instagram account is a Business or Creator type (not Personal) and that it is linked to a Facebook Page where you have admin access.
  • Posts fail to publish: Ensure your Instagram account is still linked to the Facebook Page. Changes to Facebook Page roles or Instagram account type can break the connection.
  • Images look cropped: Use Instagram's recommended aspect ratios. Buffer shows a preview of how your image will appear, so check this before scheduling.
  • Reconnection needed: If your connection expires (Meta tokens expire periodically), go to Settings, then Channels, disconnect your Instagram account, and reconnect it following the same steps above.

Plan Requirements

Buffer's free plan supports connecting Instagram with basic scheduling. For first comment scheduling, hashtag groups, advanced analytics, and best time to post suggestions, you will need a paid plan (Essentials, Team, or Agency).
