Portsmouth’s town council voted Monday night to delay approving the license for the Portuguese American Citizens Club’s annual St. Anthony’s Feast, following a fatal staircase collapse at the venue.
The decision comes after someone died in the incident at the club. The council did not immediately approve the event’s operating license, instead choosing to postpone the decision pending further investigation and safety assessments.
The St. Anthony’s Feast is a major annual event for the Portuguese American community in Portsmouth. The council’s delay signals it won’t move forward with approval until safety concerns are resolved.
