Doctors Issue First Recess Guidelines in 13 Years

A major pediatrics group just released new recommendations about recess for the first time since 2013. The American Academy of Pediatrics says recess isn’t just downtime—it’s essential for kids’ health and academic performance.

The guidance comes as schools across the country continue cutting recess time or eliminating it altogether. Educators often reduce breaks to squeeze in more instruction, but the new recommendations push back on that approach.

The academy’s latest guidance emphasizes that recess improves focus, reduces behavioral problems, and supports physical fitness. It also helps kids develop social skills and manage stress. The organization is calling on schools to protect recess time the same way they protect core subjects.

Rhode Island schools vary widely in how much recess they offer. Some elementary schools provide 20-30 minutes daily. Others offer less. The new guidelines suggest schools should look at their current practices and consider whether they’re giving kids enough unstructured play time.
