How to Connect Bluesky to Buffer

Bluesky has emerged as a significant decentralized social media platform, and Buffer now supports scheduling posts to Bluesky alongside your other social channels. This integration is ideal for brands, creators, and marketers who want to establish a presence on Bluesky without manually posting content throughout the day. By connecting Bluesky to Buffer, you can plan your content calendar, maintain a consistent posting schedule, and manage your Bluesky presence from the same dashboard you use for Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, and other platforms.

Prerequisites

Gather the following before connecting Bluesky to Buffer:

  • Bluesky account: You need an active Bluesky account. Sign up at bsky.app if you do not already have one. Bluesky is open to the public and does not require an invite code.
  • Bluesky App Password: Bluesky uses App Passwords for third-party integrations instead of your main account password. You will need to generate one before connecting to Buffer. This is done in Bluesky under Settings, then Privacy and Security, then App Passwords.
  • Buffer account: A Buffer account on any plan that supports Bluesky as a channel. Check Buffer's current channel list to confirm Bluesky is included in your plan. Buffer has been rolling out Bluesky support across its plans.
  • Your Bluesky handle: Know your full Bluesky handle, which looks like @username.bsky.social or a custom domain handle if you have configured one.

Step-by-Step Connection Guide

  1. First, generate an App Password in Bluesky. Log in to bsky.app, go to Settings, then Privacy and Security, then App Passwords.
  2. Click Add App Password. Give it a descriptive name like "Buffer" so you can identify it later. Click Create App Password.
  3. Bluesky will display the generated App Password. Copy this password immediately and save it somewhere secure. You will not be able to view it again after closing the dialog.
  4. Now log in to Buffer at buffer.com.
  5. Click the Settings gear icon in the left sidebar.
  6. Select Channels.
  7. Click Connect Channel and select Bluesky from the list of available platforms.
  8. Buffer will ask for your Bluesky handle (for example, yourname.bsky.social) and the App Password you generated in step 3. Enter both fields.
  9. Click Connect. Buffer will verify your credentials with the Bluesky API. If successful, your Bluesky account will appear in your channel list.

Unlike platforms that use OAuth (where you authorize through the platform's website), Bluesky uses the AT Protocol which requires App Passwords for third-party access. This means the connection process is slightly different from connecting Instagram or Facebook, but it is straightforward.

Configuration and Settings

Posting Schedule

Set up your Bluesky posting schedule in Buffer by going to Publishing, selecting your Bluesky channel, and clicking Posting Schedule. Add time slots for each day when you want posts to go live. Since Bluesky is still growing, optimal posting times may differ from established platforms. Start with a few time slots spread throughout the day and adjust as you learn when your Bluesky audience is most active.

Post Formatting

Bluesky posts support up to 300 characters of text, images (up to four per post), and link cards. When composing posts in Buffer, the character counter will reflect Bluesky's limit. If you are cross-posting to multiple platforms, Buffer will show you a preview specific to Bluesky so you can adjust the content to fit within the character limit.

Cross-Posting Configuration

Buffer allows you to create a single post and publish it to multiple channels. When cross-posting, customize the Bluesky version of your post to fit the platform's culture and character limit. Click on the Bluesky channel tab in the composer to edit the Bluesky-specific version independently of other channels.

Queue Management

Posts scheduled for Bluesky will appear in your Buffer queue alongside posts for other channels. You can reorder, edit, or delete queued Bluesky posts at any time before they are published. Use the calendar view to see your Bluesky posting schedule in context with all your other channels.

What You Can Do After Setup

  • Schedule text posts and image posts: Create and schedule Bluesky posts with text, images, or a combination. Buffer handles the formatting and publishes them at your scheduled times.
  • Cross-post to Bluesky and other platforms: Write a post once and publish it to Bluesky, X, Mastodon, LinkedIn, and other platforms simultaneously, with per-platform customization.
  • Maintain a consistent Bluesky presence: Use Buffer's queue to ensure regular posting on Bluesky even when you are busy with other work. A consistent posting cadence helps build your Bluesky following.
  • Use Buffer's AI Assistant: Generate post ideas and refine your Bluesky content using Buffer's AI writing tools. The assistant can help you condense longer content into Bluesky's 300-character format.
  • Track basic engagement: Monitor how your scheduled Bluesky posts perform in terms of likes, reposts, and replies through Buffer's analytics, if available for your plan.

Best Practices

  • Tailor content for Bluesky's culture: Bluesky has its own community norms that differ from X or other platforms. The tone tends to be more conversational and community-oriented. Avoid overly promotional content and focus on authentic engagement. Customize your Bluesky posts in Buffer rather than posting identical copies from other platforms.
  • Use alt text on images: Bluesky's community strongly values accessibility. When uploading images to your Buffer posts, always add descriptive alt text. Buffer's composer includes an alt text field for each image you attach.
  • Post at varied times initially: Since Bluesky audience data is still maturing, experiment with different posting times in your first few weeks. Spread your scheduled posts across morning, midday, and evening, then check engagement to find your sweet spot.
  • Engage beyond scheduled posts: Buffer handles your scheduled content, but genuine engagement on Bluesky requires replying to others, reposting interesting content, and participating in conversations. Dedicate time to engage natively on Bluesky in addition to your Buffer-scheduled posts.
  • Keep App Passwords secure: Treat your Bluesky App Password like any API credential. Do not share it. If you suspect it has been compromised, revoke it in Bluesky's settings and create a new one, then update it in Buffer.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Connection fails with invalid credentials: Double-check that you are using an App Password, not your main Bluesky account password. Also verify your handle is entered correctly, including the full domain (for example, username.bsky.social). If you use a custom domain as your handle, enter that instead.
  • Posts fail to publish: Check that your Bluesky App Password has not been revoked. Go to Bluesky Settings, then App Passwords, and verify the "Buffer" App Password is still listed. If it was deleted, create a new one and update it in Buffer.
  • Images not appearing on posts: Ensure images are in JPG or PNG format and under 1 MB each. Bluesky supports up to four images per post. If an image fails, try compressing it or converting it to a different format before re-uploading.
  • Character count mismatch: Bluesky counts characters differently from some other platforms, particularly with URLs and mentions. If your post is near the 300-character limit, Buffer's preview should show the accurate count. Shorten your text if needed.
  • Link cards not generating: When you include a URL in a Bluesky post, a link card preview should appear. If it does not, the destination website may not have Open Graph meta tags configured, or the URL may be behind a paywall or redirect. There is no fix on your end other than trying a different URL.

Limitations and Workarounds

  • No thread scheduling: Buffer may not support scheduling Bluesky threads (multi-post sequences) as a single unit. If you want to post a thread, you would need to schedule each post individually with precise timing. Workaround: Schedule posts one minute apart and manually verify the threading.
  • Limited analytics: Bluesky's API provides less analytics data than platforms like Instagram or Facebook. Buffer may show basic metrics (likes, reposts, replies) but detailed reach and impression data may not be available. Workaround: Check Bluesky's own interface or third-party Bluesky analytics tools for additional data.
  • No video support: Bluesky video support through third-party tools may be limited depending on API availability. If Buffer does not support Bluesky video posts, you will need to post videos directly through bsky.app.
  • No direct message management: Buffer does not handle Bluesky direct messages. Manage conversations directly through the Bluesky app or website.
  • Custom feeds and lists not accessible: Buffer cannot interact with Bluesky's custom feeds or list features. Content curation and feed management must be done within Bluesky directly.
