How to Connect Bluesky to Hootsuite

As Bluesky continues to grow as a decentralized social platform, Hootsuite has added support for scheduling and managing Bluesky content. Connecting Bluesky to Hootsuite allows marketing teams and social media managers to incorporate Bluesky into their existing multi-platform workflow. You can schedule posts, monitor your Bluesky activity, and coordinate your Bluesky content strategy alongside Instagram, X, LinkedIn, Facebook, and TikTok from a single dashboard.

Prerequisites

Ensure you have the following before starting the connection:

  • Bluesky account: You need an active account on Bluesky. Register at bsky.app if you do not have one yet.
  • Bluesky App Password: Hootsuite connects to Bluesky using an App Password rather than OAuth. Generate an App Password in Bluesky under Settings, then Privacy and Security, then App Passwords. Click Add App Password, name it "Hootsuite," and copy the generated password.
  • Hootsuite Professional plan or higher: Bluesky may be available as a channel on Professional, Team, and Enterprise plans. Verify that your Hootsuite plan supports Bluesky by checking the available social networks in your account settings.
  • Your full Bluesky handle: This is your username followed by .bsky.social (or your custom domain if you have set one up as your handle).

Step-by-Step Connection Guide

  1. Generate a Bluesky App Password first. Go to bsky.app, click Settings, then Privacy and Security, then App Passwords, and click Add App Password. Name it "Hootsuite" and copy the password.
  2. Log in to Hootsuite at hootsuite.com.
  3. Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner and select Social accounts and teams.
  4. Click Add a social account (the plus button).
  5. Look for Bluesky in the list of available social networks. If Bluesky is not listed natively, check if Hootsuite offers it through the App Directory as an integration or extension.
  6. Enter your Bluesky handle and the App Password you generated.
  7. Click Connect. Hootsuite will verify your credentials against the Bluesky API.
  8. Once verified, your Bluesky account will appear in your social accounts list. Assign it to the appropriate team if you are on a Team or Enterprise plan.

If Bluesky is available through Hootsuite's App Directory rather than as a native channel, navigate to the App Directory from the left sidebar, search for Bluesky, install the app, and follow the connection prompts which will similarly ask for your handle and App Password.

Configuration and Settings

Stream Setup

After connecting Bluesky, add a stream to your Hootsuite dashboard. Click Add Stream, select your Bluesky account, and choose the stream type. Depending on the integration, you may be able to see your posted content, mentions, or a feed of your Bluesky activity. Set up multiple streams if available to monitor different aspects of your Bluesky presence.

Posting Schedule

Configure your Bluesky posting times under Publisher, then Posting Times. Select your Bluesky account and add time slots throughout the week. If you use AutoSchedule, Hootsuite will automatically assign your Bluesky posts to available time slots. Start with two to three time slots per day and adjust based on engagement data.

Team Access

On Team and Enterprise plans, configure who can post to your Bluesky account. Go to Social accounts and teams, select the Bluesky account, and set permissions for team members. Options typically include full publishing access, draft-only access, or no access depending on each team member's role.

Content Approval Workflow

If your organization requires content review before publishing, set up an approval workflow for Bluesky posts. Team members can draft posts that go into a pending queue for review by a designated approver before they are scheduled or published.

What You Can Do After Setup

  • Schedule Bluesky posts alongside other platforms: Use Hootsuite's Composer to create and schedule Bluesky posts. Compose multi-platform posts and customize the Bluesky version to fit the 300-character limit and platform culture.
  • View your Bluesky activity in streams: Monitor your published Bluesky posts and their engagement metrics from your Hootsuite dashboard without switching to the Bluesky app.
  • Coordinate cross-platform campaigns: Use the Planner calendar to visualize your Bluesky content alongside other channels. Ensure consistent messaging across platforms during product launches or campaigns.
  • Collaborate on Bluesky content: Team members can draft, review, and approve Bluesky posts using Hootsuite's collaboration features, maintaining brand consistency and quality control.

Best Practices

  • Customize posts for Bluesky: When cross-posting, always review and edit the Bluesky version of your post. Bluesky's community has its own tone and conventions. Generic cross-posted content tends to underperform compared to platform-specific posts.
  • Use Hootsuite tags for campaign tracking: Tag your Bluesky posts with campaign labels in Hootsuite so you can measure the performance of specific campaigns or content themes in your reports.
  • Start with a moderate posting frequency: As you build your Bluesky audience, start with one to two posts per day and increase as your following grows. Use Hootsuite's analytics to determine what frequency generates the best engagement without overwhelming your followers.
  • Include images with alt text: Bluesky's community places high value on accessibility. Include descriptive alt text for all images you attach to posts. Hootsuite's composer should provide a field for alt text on each image.
  • Rotate your App Password periodically: For security, revoke and regenerate your Bluesky App Password every few months. Update the new password in Hootsuite immediately after generating it to avoid service interruption.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • Connection fails with authentication error: Verify that you are entering an App Password, not your Bluesky login password. Also confirm your handle is correct, including the full domain. If you recently changed your handle, use the new one.
  • Posts fail to publish: The most common cause is an expired or revoked App Password. Check your Bluesky App Passwords list to ensure the Hootsuite password still exists. If not, generate a new one and update Hootsuite.
  • Bluesky not appearing in social networks list: Your Hootsuite plan may not include Bluesky support, or it may be available only through the App Directory. Check the App Directory for a Bluesky integration. If neither option is available, contact Hootsuite support to ask about Bluesky availability for your plan.
  • Streams not showing data: Bluesky's API may provide limited data for third-party tools. If streams show no content, try removing and re-adding the stream. Some stream types may not be supported for Bluesky depending on the integration level.
  • Character limit errors: Bluesky posts are limited to 300 characters. If your post exceeds this limit, Hootsuite should warn you before scheduling. Edit the post to fit within the limit. URLs count toward the character limit on Bluesky.

Limitations and Workarounds

  • Limited analytics data: Bluesky provides less analytics data through its API compared to platforms like Meta or LinkedIn. Hootsuite may show basic engagement metrics but detailed demographics, reach, and impression data are likely unavailable. Workaround: Supplement with Bluesky-specific analytics tools or track performance manually.
  • No inbox or DM support: Hootsuite's Inbox will not show Bluesky direct messages or mentions for reply. Manage conversations directly on Bluesky. Workaround: Dedicate specific times during the day to check and respond on Bluesky natively.
  • No thread support: Scheduling a multi-post Bluesky thread as a connected unit is likely not supported. You would need to schedule individual posts. Workaround: Schedule posts one minute apart and verify threading manually in the Bluesky app after publishing.
  • No video scheduling: Depending on API support, scheduling video content to Bluesky through Hootsuite may not be available. Workaround: Post videos directly through the Bluesky app or website.
  • Integration maturity: Bluesky is a newer platform and its third-party integrations are still evolving. Features that work today may change as the AT Protocol and Bluesky's API develop. Stay updated on both Hootsuite and Bluesky release notes for changes.
