How to Connect YouTube to Hootsuite

Hootsuite supports YouTube as one of its connected social networks, allowing you to schedule video uploads, monitor comments, and track performance from within the Hootsuite dashboard. This guide covers the full setup process and what you can (and cannot) do with YouTube through Hootsuite.

Prerequisites

Before connecting YouTube to Hootsuite, make sure you have the following:

  • A YouTube channel: You need an existing YouTube channel associated with your Google account. If you do not have one, create a channel at youtube.com before proceeding.
  • A Hootsuite account: YouTube integration is available on Hootsuite's Professional plan and above. The free plan does not support YouTube.
  • Channel ownership or manager access: You need to be the owner of the YouTube channel, or have manager-level access through a Brand Account.

Connecting Your YouTube Channel

  1. Log in to your Hootsuite account at hootsuite.com.
  2. Click your profile icon in the lower-left corner of the dashboard.
  3. Select Manage accounts and teams (or navigate to Settings, then Social accounts).
  4. Click + Add a social network (or Connect).
  5. Select YouTube from the list of available networks.
  6. You will be redirected to Google's sign-in page. Log in with the Google account that owns or manages the YouTube channel you want to connect.
  7. Review the permissions Hootsuite is requesting and click Allow. Hootsuite needs permission to manage your YouTube videos and view your channel data.
  8. If you have multiple YouTube channels under the same Google account, select the one you want to connect.
  9. You will be redirected back to Hootsuite with your YouTube channel now connected.

Scheduling Video Uploads

Hootsuite allows you to schedule YouTube video uploads in advance. This is useful for maintaining a consistent upload schedule. Here is how to schedule a video:

  1. Click the Create button (or the pencil/compose icon) in the Hootsuite dashboard.
  2. Select your YouTube channel from the social account selector.
  3. Click the media attachment button and upload your video file. Supported formats include MP4, MOV, AVI, and WMV. YouTube accepts videos up to 12 hours long or 256 GB in size, though Hootsuite may have its own file size limits for uploads (typically up to 2 GB depending on your plan).
  4. Fill in the video details:
    • Title: The title of your video as it will appear on YouTube. Keep it under 100 characters for best results.
    • Description: Add a detailed description of your video. This is important for YouTube SEO. Include relevant keywords, links, and timestamps.
    • Tags: Add relevant tags to help YouTube categorize your video. Use specific and relevant terms.
    • Category: Select the YouTube category that best fits your video content.
    • Privacy setting: Choose Public, Unlisted, or Private. Most scheduled uploads will be set to Public.
    • Thumbnail: You can upload a custom thumbnail if your YouTube channel has verified custom thumbnail access.
  5. Click Schedule for later and select the date and time you want the video to go live.
  6. Click Schedule to confirm.

When the scheduled time arrives, Hootsuite uploads the video to YouTube and sets it to the specified privacy level.

Video Description and Tag Optimization

Since you are filling in video metadata through Hootsuite, take the time to optimize your descriptions and tags:

  • Descriptions: Write at least 200-300 words in your description. Include your primary keyword in the first two sentences, as YouTube uses the beginning of the description for search ranking. Add links to relevant resources, your website, and social profiles. Include timestamps for longer videos to improve viewer experience and potentially earn timestamp-based search results.
  • Tags: Start with your most important keyword as the first tag. Include variations and related terms. Use a mix of broad and specific tags. Avoid irrelevant tags, as YouTube may penalize misleading metadata.
  • Titles: Front-load your main keyword in the title. Keep titles compelling and accurate. Avoid clickbait that does not match your content, as this increases bounce rate and hurts your channel.

Managing Comments from Hootsuite

Hootsuite's Inbox feature (previously called Streams) allows you to monitor and respond to YouTube comments from the Hootsuite dashboard:

  1. Navigate to Inbox in the left sidebar.
  2. Your YouTube channel's comments will appear alongside messages from your other connected social accounts.
  3. Click on a comment to view it in context and type your reply directly in Hootsuite.
  4. You can assign comments to team members if you are on a Team or Enterprise plan.

This is particularly useful if you manage multiple social accounts and want to handle all your community engagement from one place. However, for high-volume YouTube channels, you may find that managing comments directly on YouTube Studio gives you more control over filtering and moderation tools.

YouTube Analytics in Hootsuite

Hootsuite provides YouTube analytics within its reporting tools. Available metrics typically include:

  • Views: Total views for each video and across your channel.
  • Watch time: How long viewers watched your videos.
  • Subscribers gained: New subscribers attributed to specific videos or time periods.
  • Engagement: Likes, dislikes, comments, and shares.
  • Top videos: Your best-performing content by views or engagement.

You can create custom reports that combine YouTube analytics with data from your other social accounts. This is available on Professional plans and above. For deeper YouTube-specific analytics (like audience retention curves, traffic sources, and click-through rates), you will still need to use YouTube Studio directly, as Hootsuite's analytics cover the most common metrics but not every detail available in YouTube's native tools.

Limitations: YouTube Shorts

YouTube Shorts scheduling through Hootsuite has limited support. Hootsuite may allow you to upload short-form vertical videos, but the resulting upload may not always be categorized as a Short by YouTube. YouTube determines whether a video is a Short based on factors like aspect ratio (9:16 vertical) and duration (60 seconds or less). If you upload a vertical video under 60 seconds through Hootsuite, YouTube may treat it as a Short, but this behavior is not guaranteed. For reliable Shorts publishing, consider using YouTube Studio directly.

Other Limitations to Be Aware Of

  • End screens and cards: You cannot add YouTube end screens or cards through Hootsuite. These must be added in YouTube Studio after the video is uploaded.
  • Premiere scheduling: Hootsuite does not support YouTube Premieres. If you want to schedule a video as a Premiere (with a countdown and live chat), use YouTube Studio.
  • Playlists: You cannot assign a video to a specific playlist through Hootsuite during upload. You would need to add it to a playlist in YouTube Studio after upload.
  • Subtitles and captions: You cannot upload subtitle files through Hootsuite. Add captions via YouTube Studio after the video is live.
  • Live streaming: Hootsuite does not support YouTube live streaming.

Troubleshooting

  • Connection errors: If your YouTube connection fails, ensure you are signed into the correct Google account and that you have accepted all requested permissions. Try revoking Hootsuite's access in your Google Account security settings and reconnecting.
  • Upload failures: Large video files may time out during upload. Try compressing your video or uploading during off-peak hours. Ensure your video format is supported.
  • Missing channel: If your YouTube channel does not appear during connection, make sure the Google account you are using actually owns the channel. Brand Account channels require specific roles.

Plan Requirements

YouTube integration requires Hootsuite's Professional plan or higher. The free Hootsuite plan does not include YouTube. Team and Enterprise plans add features like comment assignment, approval workflows, and more comprehensive analytics reporting.
