How to Connect LinkedIn to Buffer

Buffer's LinkedIn integration lets you schedule posts to both LinkedIn personal profiles and LinkedIn Company Pages. This is a significant advantage over many scheduling tools, as LinkedIn personal profile scheduling is less commonly supported. For professionals, thought leaders, and businesses that use LinkedIn as a primary channel for B2B marketing and personal branding, connecting LinkedIn to Buffer ensures consistent posting without needing to interrupt your workday to publish content.

Prerequisites

Before connecting LinkedIn to Buffer, ensure the following:

  • LinkedIn account: You need an active LinkedIn account. Both free LinkedIn accounts and LinkedIn Premium accounts work with Buffer.
  • LinkedIn Company Page admin access (if connecting a Page): If you want to schedule posts to a LinkedIn Company Page, you must be a Super Admin or Content Admin of that Page. Check your admin status on the Company Page under Admin Tools.
  • Buffer account: Any Buffer plan supports LinkedIn. The free plan includes basic scheduling. Paid plans (Essentials, Team, Agency) offer more features including analytics, team collaboration, and additional channel slots.
  • Content prepared for LinkedIn's format: LinkedIn posts support text up to 3,000 characters, images, videos (up to 10 minutes), documents (PDF slideshows), and link shares. Prepare your content to fit LinkedIn's professional context.

Step-by-Step Connection Guide

  1. Log in to Buffer at buffer.com.
  2. Click the Settings gear icon in the left sidebar.
  3. Select Channels.
  4. Click Connect Channel.
  5. Select LinkedIn Profile to connect your personal LinkedIn account, or LinkedIn Page to connect a Company Page.
  6. Buffer will redirect you to LinkedIn's authorization page. Log in with your LinkedIn credentials.
  7. LinkedIn will display the permissions Buffer is requesting. For a profile connection, this includes posting on your behalf and accessing your basic profile information. For a Page connection, it also includes managing your Company Page content. Click Allow.
  8. If connecting a Company Page, you will be asked to select which Page to connect from a list of Pages you admin.
  9. You will be redirected back to Buffer. Your LinkedIn profile or Company Page will now appear in your Channels list.

You can connect both your LinkedIn personal profile and one or more Company Pages. Each counts as a separate channel in Buffer.

Configuration and Settings

Posting Schedule

Set up your LinkedIn posting schedule by navigating to Publishing, selecting your LinkedIn channel, and clicking Posting Schedule. LinkedIn engagement tends to peak during business hours on weekdays, particularly Tuesday through Thursday between 8 AM and 11 AM in your target audience's time zone. Start with one to two time slots per weekday and adjust based on your analytics.

Post Composer Settings

When composing LinkedIn posts in Buffer, you have access to several formatting options. LinkedIn supports line breaks for readability, and you can add emojis if appropriate for your brand voice. Buffer's character counter shows your progress toward LinkedIn's 3,000-character limit. For Company Page posts, you can also tag other LinkedIn pages and add hashtags.

Document Post Setup

LinkedIn document posts (PDF carousel-style posts) are highly engaging. Buffer supports uploading PDF files as LinkedIn posts. When creating a document post, upload a PDF file in the composer, write a caption, and schedule it. The PDF pages appear as a swipeable carousel on LinkedIn, which drives strong engagement. Prepare your PDFs at 1080 x 1350 pixels per page for optimal display.

Cross-Platform Settings

When cross-posting to LinkedIn and other platforms, always customize the LinkedIn version. LinkedIn content should be more professional and detailed than what you post on Instagram or TikTok. Use the LinkedIn tab in Buffer's composer to expand your message, adjust the tone, and add LinkedIn-specific hashtags.

What You Can Do After Setup

  • Schedule personal profile and Company Page posts: Buffer supports both LinkedIn connection types. Build your personal brand with profile posts and your company's presence with Page posts, all from the same dashboard.
  • Post document carousels: Upload PDF files as document posts that display as swipeable carousels on LinkedIn. These consistently generate high engagement and are excellent for sharing tips, frameworks, case studies, and step-by-step guides.
  • Track LinkedIn analytics: View post performance metrics including impressions, clicks, likes, comments, shares, and engagement rate. Buffer's analytics help you understand which content types and topics perform best on LinkedIn.
  • Use Buffer's AI for LinkedIn content: Generate LinkedIn post ideas, optimize your writing for engagement, and repurpose content from other formats into LinkedIn-ready posts using Buffer's AI Assistant.
  • Schedule image and video posts: Upload images and videos to accompany your LinkedIn posts. Native video and multi-image posts tend to perform well on LinkedIn's algorithm.

Best Practices

  • Write the first line as a hook: LinkedIn truncates posts after two to three lines with a "see more" link. Your opening line must be compelling enough to make people expand the post. Use Buffer's preview to see exactly where the truncation occurs and craft your hook accordingly.
  • Post during business hours: LinkedIn is a professional platform with peak usage during working hours. Schedule posts for weekday mornings (8 AM to 10 AM) and early afternoons. Avoid weekends and evenings unless your analytics show otherwise. Use Buffer's scheduling to hit these windows consistently.
  • Leverage document posts for thought leadership: PDF document posts consistently outperform text-only and image posts on LinkedIn. Create slide-deck style content with one key point per page. Buffer makes it easy to schedule these in advance.
  • Engage within the first hour: LinkedIn's algorithm evaluates engagement in the first 60 minutes after posting. Schedule your posts for times when you can actively respond to early comments. Replying to comments quickly signals to LinkedIn that your post is generating conversation, which boosts distribution.
  • Use hashtags strategically: Include three to five relevant hashtags at the end of your LinkedIn posts. Avoid generic hashtags like #business or #marketing. Use niche, specific hashtags that your target audience actually follows. Buffer lets you save hashtag groups for quick insertion.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

  • LinkedIn authorization fails: Ensure you are logging in with the correct LinkedIn account. If you have multiple LinkedIn accounts (which is against LinkedIn's terms of service), make sure you are authorizing the one you intend to use. Clear browser cookies for linkedin.com and try again.
  • Company Page not appearing during connection: You must be a Super Admin or Content Admin of the LinkedIn Company Page. If the Page does not appear in the selection list, check your admin status on the Page. Ask the current Super Admin to add you as an admin, then retry the Buffer connection.
  • Posts fail to publish: LinkedIn access tokens can expire, causing scheduled posts to fail. Check your channel status in Buffer Settings. If it shows an error or expired connection, disconnect the LinkedIn account and reconnect it following the same steps.
  • Document posts not uploading: Ensure your PDF file is under the size limit (typically 100 MB or less for LinkedIn) and has fewer than 300 pages (though practically you should keep document posts under 20 pages for engagement). If the upload fails, try re-exporting the PDF at a lower quality or splitting it into smaller documents.
  • Post formatting looks different on LinkedIn: LinkedIn strips some formatting that appears in Buffer's composer. Line breaks are preserved, but bold and italic text may not carry over. Use Buffer's preview to get an accurate picture of how your post will look on LinkedIn.

Limitations and Workarounds

  • No LinkedIn article publishing: Buffer schedules standard LinkedIn posts (updates) but cannot publish LinkedIn articles (long-form blog-style content). Articles must be written and published directly on LinkedIn. Workaround: Use Buffer to schedule a post promoting your LinkedIn article with a link to it.
  • No LinkedIn event creation: Buffer cannot create LinkedIn Events. These must be created on LinkedIn directly. Workaround: Schedule promotional posts about your LinkedIn event through Buffer.
  • No LinkedIn newsletter scheduling: LinkedIn newsletters cannot be created or scheduled through Buffer. Manage your newsletter directly on LinkedIn. Workaround: Use Buffer to schedule posts that promote each newsletter edition.
  • No poll creation: LinkedIn polls cannot be created through Buffer. Polls must be created natively on LinkedIn. Workaround: Create polls directly on LinkedIn and use Buffer for all other post types.
  • No comment management: Buffer does not provide a LinkedIn inbox for managing comments or messages. You must monitor and respond to comments directly on LinkedIn. Workaround: Set dedicated times during the day to check LinkedIn notifications and engage with comments, especially within the first hour after a scheduled post goes live.
