How to Connect Twitter/X to Buffer

Buffer is one of the most popular social media scheduling tools, and Twitter/X remains one of its core supported platforms. This guide walks you through connecting your Twitter/X account to Buffer, scheduling tweets and threads, and getting the most out of Buffer's analytics and optimization features for Twitter/X.

Connecting Your Twitter/X Account

To connect Twitter/X to Buffer, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Buffer account at buffer.com.
  2. Click on Settings in the left sidebar (the gear icon).
  3. Select Channels from the settings menu.
  4. Click the Connect Channel button.
  5. Select Twitter/X from the list of available networks.
  6. You will be redirected to Twitter/X to authorize Buffer. Log in with your Twitter/X credentials if prompted.
  7. Click Authorize app to grant Buffer permission to post on your behalf.
  8. You will be redirected back to Buffer with your Twitter/X account now connected.

Buffer supports connecting multiple Twitter/X accounts, which is useful if you manage several brands or clients. Each connected account counts toward your channel limit based on your Buffer plan.

Understanding Twitter/X API Changes

Twitter/X has made significant changes to its API access since Elon Musk's acquisition. In early 2023, Twitter introduced paid API tiers, which affected many third-party tools. Buffer has maintained its Twitter/X integration, but there are some important considerations:

  • Posting still works: Buffer can still schedule and publish tweets on your behalf.
  • Analytics may be limited: Some analytics data that was previously available through the Twitter API may be restricted or delayed.
  • Occasional disruptions: Twitter/X API changes can sometimes cause temporary disruptions. If your connection stops working, try disconnecting and reconnecting your account in Buffer's Channel settings.
  • Rate limits: Twitter/X imposes rate limits on API calls. If you post very frequently, you may encounter temporary restrictions.

Scheduling Tweets

Once your account is connected, scheduling tweets in Buffer is straightforward:

  1. Click on Publishing in the left sidebar, or click the Create button.
  2. Select your Twitter/X account from the channel selector at the top of the composer.
  3. Write your tweet in the text field. Buffer displays a character counter showing you how close you are to Twitter/X's 280-character limit. If you have a Twitter/X Premium subscription, you may be able to post longer tweets, but Buffer's composer still works within the standard 280-character framework.
  4. Add media if desired (see the media section below).
  5. Choose when to publish: click Schedule Post to pick a specific date and time, or Add to Queue to use your predefined posting schedule.

You can also save tweets as drafts if you want to come back and finalize them later.

Scheduling Twitter/X Threads

Buffer supports scheduling Twitter/X threads, which is a major advantage for long-form content on the platform. To create a thread:

  1. Open the post composer and select your Twitter/X account.
  2. Write the first tweet in your thread.
  3. Click the + Add Thread button (or the thread icon) below the text field to add a new tweet to the thread.
  4. Continue adding tweets to the thread. Each tweet in the thread follows the 280-character limit independently.
  5. Schedule or queue the entire thread. Buffer publishes all tweets in the thread in sequence.

Threads are an effective way to share longer thoughts, tell stories, or break down complex topics on Twitter/X. Buffer makes it easy to plan and preview threads before they go live.

Media Attachments

Buffer supports attaching media to your tweets:

  • Images: You can attach up to 4 images per tweet. Supported formats include JPG, PNG, and GIF. Twitter/X recommends images at 1200 x 675 pixels for optimal display in the timeline.
  • GIFs: You can attach one animated GIF per tweet. Note that if you attach a GIF, you cannot also attach static images to the same tweet (this is a Twitter/X limitation).
  • Videos: Buffer supports video uploads for Twitter/X. Videos can be up to 2 minutes and 20 seconds long, with a maximum file size of 512 MB. Supported formats include MP4 and MOV.

You can upload media directly in the Buffer composer by clicking the media icon. Buffer also integrates with tools like Canva and Unsplash for creating or sourcing images without leaving the app.

Setting Up Your Posting Schedule

Buffer's queue system lets you define time slots for each day of the week. When you add a post to your queue, it fills the next available slot. To set up your posting schedule:

  1. Go to Publishing and select your Twitter/X account.
  2. Click on the Settings tab within the publishing section.
  3. Under Posting Schedule, add or remove time slots for each day of the week.
  4. Click Save to apply your schedule.

Best Times to Post

Buffer offers suggestions for optimal posting times based on your audience engagement data. This feature is available on Buffer's paid plans. To access it:

  • Navigate to Analytics in the left sidebar.
  • Select your Twitter/X account.
  • Look for the Best Time to Post or Answers section, which analyzes your past engagement data to recommend when your audience is most active.

Keep in mind that these suggestions improve over time as Buffer collects more data about your posting history and audience engagement.

Analytics and Performance Tracking

Buffer provides analytics for your Twitter/X posts on paid plans. You can track:

  • Engagement metrics: Likes, retweets, replies, and clicks for each tweet.
  • Reach and impressions: How many people saw your tweets (subject to Twitter/X API availability).
  • Top-performing posts: Buffer highlights your best tweets so you can understand what content resonates with your audience.
  • Engagement rate: The percentage of people who engaged with your tweet relative to impressions.

You can filter analytics by date range and export reports if needed. Note that due to Twitter/X API restrictions, some metrics may not be available or may be delayed compared to what you see natively on Twitter/X.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Buffer with Twitter/X

  • Use the queue consistently: Batch-create tweets and add them to your queue so you maintain a consistent posting cadence without daily effort.
  • Leverage threads for longer content: If you have a blog post or detailed insight to share, break it into a thread rather than trying to compress it into a single tweet.
  • Monitor analytics weekly: Check which tweets performed well and adjust your content strategy accordingly.
  • Reconnect if needed: If you notice posts failing to publish, go to Settings, then Channels, disconnect your Twitter/X account, and reconnect it. API token issues are the most common cause of publishing failures.
  • Be mindful of rate limits: Avoid scheduling dozens of tweets in rapid succession. Space them out using Buffer's queue system to stay within Twitter/X's posting guidelines.

Plan Requirements

Buffer's free plan allows you to connect up to 3 channels and schedule a limited number of posts per channel. For more channels, unlimited scheduling, and full analytics, you will need one of Buffer's paid plans (Essentials, Team, or Agency). Thread scheduling is available on all plans, including the free tier.
