All-in-one email marketing platform with automation, landing pages, and audience management for businesses of all sizes.
Full ReviewConnecting Mailchimp to Squarespace enables email list building from your website and, for Commerce stores, automated email marketing based on customer purchase behavior. The integration syncs newsletter subscribers and customer data from Squarespace to Mailchimp, where you can build email campaigns, automated sequences, and audience segments. For Squarespace Commerce users, the integration also supports abandoned cart emails, post-purchase follow-ups, and product recommendation campaigns.
Squarespace has its own built-in email marketing tool (Squarespace Email Campaigns), but Mailchimp offers significantly more advanced features including automation workflows, A/B testing, predictive analytics, advanced segmentation, and a broader integration ecosystem. If your email marketing needs extend beyond basic newsletters, Mailchimp is worth the additional tool in your stack.
In your Squarespace dashboard, go to Settings > Marketing > Email Marketing. Select Mailchimp from the available integrations. Click Connect and log in to your Mailchimp account. Authorize the connection by granting Squarespace access to your Mailchimp audience data.
Choose which Mailchimp audience (list) should receive subscribers from Squarespace. If you have only one audience, it will be selected automatically. If you have multiple audiences, select the one you use for website subscribers and customers.
Add a Newsletter Block to your Squarespace pages to collect email subscribers. In the Squarespace editor, add a Newsletter Block from the content blocks menu. In the block settings, select Mailchimp as the storage option and choose your connected audience. Configure which fields to display (email, first name, last name) and customize the submit button text and confirmation message.
Squarespace offers promotional pop-ups that can collect email addresses. Go to Marketing > Promotional Pop-ups. Create a new pop-up, add a newsletter signup form, and connect it to your Mailchimp audience. Configure display rules (show after time on page, scroll percentage, or exit intent) and targeting (which pages, new versus returning visitors).
For Squarespace Commerce stores, the Mailchimp connection also syncs customer purchase data. In Mailchimp, navigate to Integrations > Manage and find your Squarespace connection. Verify that ecommerce tracking is enabled. This allows Mailchimp to track purchase data, enabling abandoned cart automations and purchase-based segmentation.
In Mailchimp, go to Automations > Create. For a welcome series, select Welcome New Subscribers and map it to your Squarespace audience. For Commerce stores, create an Abandoned Cart automation connected to your Squarespace store. Customize email content, timing, and design to match your brand.
Mailchimp merge fields (FNAME, LNAME, etc.) map to the fields in your Squarespace newsletter blocks. You can add custom fields in both Squarespace and Mailchimp for additional data collection. Tags can be assigned to subscribers based on which Squarespace page they signed up from, enabling targeted campaigns based on interest. For Commerce stores, configure which ecommerce automations to activate: welcome series, abandoned cart, post-purchase follow-up, re-engagement, and product recommendations.

| Cart abandonment data | Squarespace to Mailchimp | Real-time |
Verify the newsletter block is configured to use Mailchimp (not Squarespace's built-in email). Edit the newsletter block, click the storage tab, and confirm Mailchimp is selected with the correct audience. Test by submitting a signup with a new email address and checking Mailchimp's audience for the new contact.
If Mailchimp has double opt-in enabled, new subscribers must confirm their subscription via email before they appear as subscribed. Check your Mailchimp audience settings under Settings > Audience name and defaults to see if double opt-in is active. If you prefer single opt-in, disable it there (note: some jurisdictions require double opt-in).
Ecommerce sync requires a Squarespace Commerce plan and the ecommerce tracking option enabled in the Mailchimp integration. Disconnect and reconnect the integration if purchase data is not appearing. Ensure you have completed at least one real purchase (test orders may not trigger the sync).
Use Mailchimp's Customer Journey Builder to create multi-step automated campaigns that combine triggers from Squarespace (signup, purchase, abandonment) with Mailchimp's conditional logic, delays, and branching. Implement Mailchimp's website pop-up forms as an alternative to Squarespace's native pop-ups if you need more advanced targeting rules. Connect Mailchimp to Facebook and Google Ads to create lookalike audiences from your Squarespace customer list, extending your reach to similar potential customers.
