Rhode Island’s population is projected to drop below 1.05 million by 2050, a decline of more than 5% from today’s levels. The state currently has roughly 1.1 million residents.
The forecast comes from demographic projections tracking population trends across the country. For Rhode Island, the numbers reflect migration patterns and birth rates that have shifted over the past several years.
The decline would mark a significant shift for a state that has maintained relatively stable population numbers for decades. Neighboring states face similar pressures, though the rates vary.
